Friday, August 5, 9:00 PM

You’re invited to a statewide star party with hosts Mark Breen, director of the planetarium at the Fairbanks Museum, and Vermont Public’s Mary Engisch. Mark produces the astronomy podcast Eye on the Night Sky, which is broadcast weekdays on Vermont Public.

Mark will lead a guided tour of the summer sky, identifying stars, planets and constellations. You’ll learn about the Summer Triangle, Perseid meteor shower, how to use the Big Dipper to find other stars and much more. Your questions and observations are an important part of this live broadcast. You can call Vermont Public during the show or send your questions to community@vermontpublic.com.

Want to throw your own star-gazing party? It’s easy! Invite your friends and neighbors and choose a place to view the stars that is away from streetlights. Get comfortable in you lawn chairs or spread blankets on the ground. Stream from VermontPublic.org or tune your radio to your local Vermont Public station … and turn your gaze toward the sky!

Pro tip: For “night vision” that won’t interfere with your ability to see the stars, wrap a red scarf, bandana or cellophane around your flashlight and secure it with a rubber band.
