We’ve just made homes for several new creatures that might send a shiver down your spine. Creepy Crawlies includes creatures that are the stuff of scary stories, often venomous and potentially dangerous, although mostly to other insects and rarely to humans. They are also widely misunderstood.
Welcome to the bizarre and amazing world of Arthropods. Arthropods are invertebrate animals with an exoskeleton, segmented bodies and jointed appendages. Insects, arachnids, myriapods, and crustaceans are all arthropods.
Arthropods make up 80% of all known living animal species. Estimates of the number of arthropod species vary wildly from 1,170,000 to 10 million.
You’re invited to enter the realm of scorpions, tarantulas, harlequin crabs, and ghost mantises!
This exhibit contains a sampling of the incredible variety of arthropods found on planet earth. We’ve built a cave within the Museum’s main gallery to help these nocturnal hunters feel at home. You might spy them stalking their prey — unsuspecting crickets or meal worms that we introduce to their habitats regularly.
